Bartender

Bartender

When Johnny Chung Kam Hung worked as a bartender at The Peninsula 50 years ago, a guest ordered ""Screwdriver"" (a cocktail made with vodka mixed with orange juice), but Chung mistakenly assumed that the guest wanted a screwdriver literally. The guest, who is Hollywood movie star Clark Gable, burst into laughter and taught Chung to make the ""Screwdriver"". Since then, the first glass of ""Screwdriver"" was officially launched in Hong Kong.

Bartenders follow instructions to prepare cocktails with wine, fruit juice, water and ice in glassware. It’s a must for them to remember the names and features of wines, master cocktail mixing skills as well as properly store and use different wines. They also have to identify alcoholic drinks offered in different bars, like those in hotels, restaurants and steak houses.

The abovementioned skills are only basic for bartenders. Even if they are able to prepare all cocktails named, they still need to uniquely create cocktails embodying their own personality. Yet the priority task for a bartender is to communicate with customers and choose the cocktail that can best suit the customers rather than simply offering them drinks.
