Blogging could become a profession (Jansen) 18/03/2008

Many young people today diligently maintain blogs to record their daily lives, talk about football, comment on celebrities, post pictures and whatnot. But have you ever imagined that one day this could eventually become part of your career?

In fact, many overseas corporations have begun using blogs as a means to communicate with their clients. Some companies even have dedicated blogs for each of their products so that users can directly relay their opinion to the person in charge of the respective product blogs. This serves to gauge customer opinion and at the same time enhance the customers' sense of association with a company's products.

Blogs can also play an important element in these companies' marketing programmes because they have a cascade effect. When a company recommends a new product or service in one of its blogs, their supporters, or an interested blogger, recommend the product in their own blogs and link back to the company's blog. These posts can increase exponentially, and new products and services soon circulate around the internet and become widely known. Some posts could get so widespread that they could end up in the mass media and become a printed story. One could say that this proliferation, which is a main feature of the internet, really took off with the advent of blogs.

Apart from this, some traditional media might also do some of their reporting via blogs. One reason is that it is easy to update blogs online and another is that readers could subscribe to them easily.

If companies use blogs as a marketing tool, people are going to be needed to maintain them. I have been blogging since 2001, and have been on many occasions asked by companies to collaborate with them on blogging projects. Some of my friends got to know various companies through blogging, and even garnered media opportunities, eventually expanding their career opportunities.

So, treating your blogging more seriously could actually open up some opportunities for you. Of course, a lot of preparation work is required before someone or some opportunity comes knocking at your door. So you should always be prepared to take in new knowledge and learn more about the blogging culture, or you may fail to grasp the opportunity when it comes by.
