Someone from Mars (Yi-hing Ong) 20/11/2008

It has nothing to do with her looks, but everything to do with her image. Judging from her personality, she certainly looks otherworldly and innocent, like someone from Mars.

What seems out of place is not so much that her voice quavers, which some people find pretentious, but her worn-out gags, plus that peacock plumage effect of her hair colour and her sexy outfits.

But shouldn't someone from Mars be wearing a fish-bowl-like air mask? Why is she dressed up like that?

I can never forget the soul-stirring charm of her song "I Was Really Hurt" when I first heard it sung, which sounded so out of this world. Up till "You Are the Love of My Life", her voice has been healing many broken hearts. She is like an elf that knows nothing about human sorrows, but sheds tears for humanity nonetheless.

Her voice truly has the purity beyond that of any human voice -- so sweet, delicate and clear. It may be hard to believe, but paradoxically she manages to survive by finding herself a niche as a singer in Hong Kong society, despite its blatantly commercial nature.

A niche from which to look at Mars in the distance.
