Full prepared for the challenge, Wu Lai Fong took part in the Government's first interview to recruit firewomen. In the end she passed and was recruited to be the first female Senior Station Officer in the 125-year history of the Fire Services Department. She worked much harder than the others, running 5,000 metres on alternate days, lifting weights, and doing push-ups and sit-ups as she wanted to reach the same standard of fitness as men. She got along all right with her male colleagues. However, it was more difficult for men to get used to a female boss. Disciplinary services requires efficiency and decisiveness. A fire scene would also put the patience and fighting spirit of fire officers to test. However dangerous or challenging a task is, they must keep calm at all times. Though the job of putting out fires and saving lives is daunting, it has given Madam Wu the greatest sense of satisfaction.
