I joined the Police College for training in September 2005
I am now stationed at the Patrol Team in Central
I had already joined the uniformed groups when I was in college
and I hoped my future career could relate to it as well
That is the reason I chose to be a police constable
At the very beginning, the greatest difficulty was that
I lacked experience in communicating with the public
My tutor PC taught me how to deal with different conditions
We would discuss and evaluate
It made it easier for me to adapt to the working environment
To recall an unforgettable incident, I remember I was on patrol in Central on Lyndhurst Terrace
An American-born Chinese woman who had parents and a daughter with her approached me
Her daughter said she needed to report lost property
I told them to go to the Police Services Centre which was located near Queen’s Road Central
They said they didn't know the way
And I said no problem, I could bring them there
However, there were lots of other people at the Centre
So I then helped the woman to enter their data in the computer and
printed the lost property form for her
Since the lost property form had my name printed on it
They called me afterwards, and said thank you very much to me
People may not need help from the police all the time
But if we can really help them
They do appreciate it
For fitness, I go to the gym to train myself
However, when I went for the job interview, I had questions that I did not know how to answer
The unforgettable experience was that I answered the questions wrongly
When I entered the final interview, I was assigned a video to watch.
It was about how a crime happened
I needed to pay attention to the route of how the thieves left
Their clothing and appearance, etc
When the interviewer asked me
I answered confidently about what the thieves wore
Unfortunately, I was wrong
And I was very nervous once I got this wrong
But the interviewer was very kind to me
He told me the correct answer and gave me the chance to answer other questions
You need to pay attention to a few points if you want to be an outstanding police officer
Good physical condition is a must since the work requires you to use physical force sometimes
Learn to listen, watch and ask
Listen more to the experience of your colleagues
Ask more about those things you do not really understand and think about how you would handle a situation
Watch more and try to work under different conditions
I felt the job was tough when I lacked experience in the beginning
But there’s no need to feel scared, just do more and you will overcome your apprehensions
Young people are qualified to be a police constable when they have the goal of serving the community
