As South Korean culture has a sweeping influence across the globe, popular celebrities and the ever-blossoming economy prompted a large crowd from overseas to study in the country. However, overseas applicants need to pass the Test of Proficiency In Korean (TOPIK) Level 4, the basic language level in order to meet the basic requirement of enrollment.
Many students have started to opt for other subjects besides Korean and Translation in recent years, like Cosmetic Science and Korean makeup techniques. Quite a large crowd also opted for majors in performing arts, including dancing, film studies and music out of strong interests in the entertainment industry, hoping to become a star through training. Some well-known Korean stars, like Y.E in Wonder Girls, Cho GyuHyun in Super Junior, are graduates of postmodern music department of Kyung Hee University.
Yet, overseas applicants should bear in mind that a basic level of Korean and sound knowledge of the local cultures are prerequisite to the studies. Top-notch universities in South Korea including Seoul National University, Yonsei University and Korea University all established the academy specializing in Korean for non-local students. Students can thus decide on the place of Korean acquisition, either in Hong Kong or in South Korea.
