Seafarer (Seagoing vessels)

Basically a seaman works on the ship should choose to work in the deck or the engineering departments. Local vessels, river trade vessels or seagoing vessels requires crew members.

The deck department is responsible for ensuring safe navigation of vessels, safe handling and maintaining cargo on the vessels in good condition. The ranks of deck officers of seagoing vessels include master mariners, chief mates, second and third officers, as well as night vision officers.

To become a deck officer of seagoing vessels, one must first complete recognised maritime courses and other training, and serve as a cadet in the deck department to receive in-service training. After obtaining sufficient sea service experience, the cadet may apply for the respective examination for the Certificates of Competency (Deck Officer) Class 3, and be eligible to serve as night vision officer, third officer or second officer. After accumulating sufficient sea time, the officer may apply for examinations for Class 2 and then Class 1 certificates. Upon obtaining the Class 1 certificate, the officer is eligible to serve as a master mariner.

The engineering department is responsible for the maintaining all machinery and electrical appliances onboard, as well as ensuring that the vessel has sufficient fuel reserves. The ranks of engineering officers of seagoing vessels include chief engineer, second engineer and engineering watchkeeping officers.

To become a marine engineer officer of seagoing vessels, one must first complete recognised maritime courses and serve as a cadet in the engineering department to receive in-service training. After completing workshop skills trainings and obtaining sufficient sea time, the cadet may apply for the respective examination for the Certificates of Competency (Marine Engineer Officer) Class 3, and be eligible to serve as an engineering watchkeeping officer. With the accumulation of more sea time, the officer may apply for the examinations for the Class 2 and then Class 1 certificates in a gradual manner. Upon obtaining the required certificate, the officer is eligible to serve as a chief engineer.
